AI companion apps you can actually call: 6 compared (2026)

The short version

  • All six apps here offer some kind of live voice conversation. They differ most in what is free, what calls cost, and whether romance can turn explicit.
  • Free to try a call: Velvet Hour (5 minutes once you add an email) and Sesame (free while in preview). Character.AI launched calls free on its mobile app in 2024.
  • Subscription needed for calls: Kindroid (subscribers only). Nomi includes voice with a subscription.
  • Never explicit: Velvet Hour. Nomi and Kindroid list "Sexual Content or Nudity" on the App Store.
  • We make Velvet Hour, so read our section with that in mind. Every fact about other apps links to where we found it.

Full disclosure: we make Velvet Hour. We built it around phone-style calls, so we care about this question more than most. We checked every other app on its own website or App Store page on November 4, 2026. Prices are US App Store prices and change often.

Texting an AI companion is everywhere now. Talking to one out loud, with a voice that sounds like a person and answers in real time, is still rarer, and the details matter: some apps keep calls behind a subscription, some count minutes, and some only offer calls on the phone app.

1. Velvet Hour: built around calls

Velvet Hour is the app we make. You pick from 44 companions (or design your own), text them, and call them. Each one has a designed voice with a real accent, from Delhi to Miami to Paris, and they can talk in 12 languages. They remember your life between conversations, and they can text or call you first if you turn that on.

  • Calls: live, interruptible conversation, billed by the second. Free accounts get 5 minutes once they add an email; Plus includes 60 minutes a month, Premium 180.
  • Price: free to start; Plus $14.99/month, Premium $29.99/month.
  • Content: Friendly, Flirty or Romantic. Romantic is affectionate but never explicit, enforced on our servers. Adults 18+ only.
  • Where: the website and Telegram (each companion has their own bot). iPhone and Android apps are on the way.

Where it falls short: it is new, so there is no community or years of polish yet. There is no explicit mode, by design. And until the phone apps launch, calls run in your browser or inside Telegram.

2. Nomi: strong memory, voice with a subscription

Nomi offers real-time voice conversations and describes its memory as "human-level", with short, medium and long-term memory. It is free to start; the Standard plan is $15.99 a month on the US App Store, and Nomi says subscribers get unlimited voices. Its terms say it is for adults 18+, and its App Store listing includes "Sexual Content or Nudity".

Good fit if long-term memory matters most and you are happy to subscribe for voice.

3. Kindroid: deep customization, subscribers only

Kindroid offers voice and video calls to subscribers, using monthly audio credits. There is no ongoing free tier: new accounts get a 50-message preview, then the chat becomes read-only, and there is a 3-day trial. The subscription starts at $15.99 a month on the US App Store, with Ultra and MAX tiers above it. Kindroid is 18+ and checks age through payment or a selfie or ID check.

Good fit if you want to customize every detail and already know you will pay.

4. Replika: the best-known name

Replika offers text, voice calls and video, and says it remembers "your people, plans, and goals". It has a free tier, with in-app purchases on the US App Store from $7.99. Replika runs on iOS, Android and a legacy web app. In 2025, Italy's data protection regulator fined its maker €5 million under GDPR, including for the lack of age verification.

Good fit if you want the most established app in the category.

5. Character.AI: huge character library

Character.AI has live voice calls in its mobile apps and a vast library of user-made characters. It has a free tier, and Character.AI+ is listed at $9.99 on the US App Store. Since November 2025, people under 18 can no longer have open-ended chats there, and it now uses age assurance.

Good fit if you want variety and role-play more than one ongoing relationship.

6. Sesame: impressive voice, not really a companion

Sesame is a voice-first app with very low-latency conversation partners and memory across voice and text. It is free during its preview, on iOS in 39 countries. It presents its characters as personal agents rather than romantic companions, so it is a voice benchmark more than a direct alternative.

Good fit if you are curious how natural AI voice can sound.

How to choose

  1. Decide whether you want romance, and how far. If you want it to stay non-explicit, pick an app that guarantees that rather than one that relies on filters.
  2. Check what a call really costs. Look for minutes included in the plan and whether calls work on the free tier.
  3. Try the voice first. Voices vary more than text quality does; a two-minute call tells you more than any review.
  4. Look at memory. A companion that forgets your week makes calls feel hollow.
  5. Check where it runs. Browser, Telegram, iPhone or Android: use the one you will actually open at 11 pm.

Want to hear the difference? Velvet Hour gives you 30 free messages and a 5-minute call, no card needed.

Questions

Which AI companion app has the most realistic voice calls?
It depends on your ear. Sesame is a strong voice demo but not a romantic companion. Among companion apps, Velvet Hour, Nomi, Kindroid, Replika and Character.AI all offer live calls; try a short call in two or three before paying.
Can I call an AI companion for free?
Yes, in some apps. Velvet Hour gives 5 free call minutes once you add an email, and Sesame is free during its preview. Character.AI launched calls free on mobile in 2024. Kindroid keeps calls for subscribers.
Are AI companion voice calls private?
Read each app's privacy policy. At Velvet Hour, call audio is processed live to reply and is not stored; the conversation is kept as text so your companion remembers it, and you can delete everything any time.
Do AI companion apps have age limits?
Most are 18+ on the App Store, and from November 16, 2026 Apple requires an 18+ rating for apps whose companions engage in romantic or sexual content.
